Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month of the year for Muslims. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs. The fast is broken each day after sunset with a meal called iftar. Muslims are also encouraged to increase their charitable activities during this time and perform extra prayers.
Ramadan is believed to be the month in which the first verses of the Quran, the holy book of Islam, were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims therefore spend more time reading and studying the Quran during this time.
The end of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which is celebrated with family, friends, and the community.
